Synonym: European Union
The umbrella term introduced in the Maastricht Treaty to refer to the three-pillar construction in Europe of the European Community and two new areas of co-operation; common foreign and security policy, and justice and home affairs. It has taken over in common usage to refer to the Community in all its aspects.
