The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (Geneva) was founded in 1948 as an ad hoc Secretariat defined by a treaty between trading nations. The Secretariat was absorbed by the new World Trade Organisation in 1995, but the GATT agreement remains as the WTO's underlying treaty document for trade in merchandise albeit with many updates since 1948.
