Flat

A term whose meaning depends on context. Markets that are neither rising nor falling are said to be flat, or moving sideways. A bond that trades without accrued interest because none is due or the issuer is in default is said to be a flat bond. A trader is said to have a flat or square position if he is neither long nor short.
